Removing the Bag
The photo is not really clear or descriptive, but to access the tag axle air bag lower inside nut, a universal joint and an extension needs to be used through the access hole. The outer nut is accessed from below with an extension. |

Rather than jack axles up to reach the compressed air bags I would just use the blow gun and compressed air. That would inflate the air bag enough so I could push the bottom around a little until the studs dropped through the bottom holes and I could secure it with nuts. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Final Thoughts
We learned some things along the way that will save others a lot of frustration. Do not use teflon tape for the pipe threads. We chased leaks on Roger's bus and eventually ended up using Permatex Thread Seal in a small jar with a brush attached to the underside of the cap. I used the plumber pipe thread sealer. Both worked excellent and there were no leaks. . |

Modification for Future Replacment Ease
As you are aware the front air bag fittings can be loosened and removed and then replaced without any modifications if you have the patience. It goes a little easier if you modify a tool as we did, but if you want to make future replacements easier you can modify the front air bag fittings as shown in the photo. To do that cut the air line as close to the existing compression fitting as possible. This will require a second cut later when your new fittings are installed and you have determined where to make the final cut. Cutting the hose and removing the compression ell saves about 15 minutes of disassembly time and a similar amount of assembly time per air bag. We used a 1/2" street ell, a 4" X 1/2" nipple, a 1/2" connector, and a 1/2" tube to male compression fitting. If you wish the compression fitting can be a female and eliminate the connector, but use a 4 1/2" pipe nipple. The key to the modifications is not only the use of brush on thread sealant or pipe dope, but making absolutely sure the air line is perfectly clean on the outside. Jon W. 12.7.2006 |
